Pittsburgh Flag Meaning & History

The colors black and gold had been representative of Pittsburgh since the 1750s and were chosen to be the stripes of the city’s flag when it was adopted on March 15, 1899. In the center is Pittsburgh’s coat of arms, based on that of William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. The city was named in his honor, with the addition of the suffix “burgh,” another word for town.
