Hungarian Flag Colors, Meaning & History

The modern Hungarian flag originated in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, which fought for independence from the Habsburg Empire. The tricolor used is based on France’s flag since the French Revolution was occurring at the same time. However, the design is horizontal instead of vertical, so it does not look like the Italian flag. This flag was ratified as the official state flag on May 23, 1957.

The colors of red, white, and green are based on the Hungarian coat of arms, which has existed in various forms since the 12th century. The red stripe stands for strength, the white for faithfulness and freedom, and the green for hope and the region's pastures.
